Yet Another Reason Why Canyon Rim Ranch Is Such A Great Place To Live!

Canyon Rim Ranch recently applied for and was awarded the designation as a Firewise USA community by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

The Firewise program is co-sponsored by the United States Forest Service, the United States Department of Interior and the National Association of State Foresters. The program teaches people how to adapt to living with the threat of wildfires and encourages neighbors to work together to prevent losses. As a result of the designation, Canyon Rim Ranch joins approximately 1,500 communities across the country that have been recognized by the NFPA’s Firewise program, only eight of which are in South Dakota.

The steep canyon walls, large mountain meadows and proximity to pristine forest make Canyon Rim Ranch a beautiful place to live. But with such beauty also comes the potential risk of wildfires. So, in 2010, the community sought the advice and help of David Hettick, a rural forester with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture. In the ensuing years, Canyon Rim Ranch has completed 215.9 acres of forest stand improvement and fuels treatment, as well as 105.7 acres of conifer removal and fuel treatment in natural meadow areas, and most of the individual owners have completed fuel treatments on their own properties. Canyon Rim Ranch has also become a member of the American Tree Farm System.

With less fuel and proper preparation, the risk of wildfire is greatly diminished. And, by continuing their efforts, the homeowners of Canyon Rim Ranch should be able to enjoy the natural beauty for many years to come.

Red Cloud’s War Shirt

This replica of Red Cloud’s war shirt is offered at $99,000

The original war shirt, worn by Red Cloud during one of his 1870’s trips to meet with the “Great White Father” in Washington, D.C. is considered sacred. Each element of the shirt has a specific meaning to the Lakota intended to impart “sacred powers” to the “Wicasa Itancan” (leader of men). It is now on display at the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Wyoming.

What you see here is one of only six replicas in existence!

This replica is hand-made, exactly as the original, using ONLY authentic materials and ancient techniques. For example, its leather is “brain-tanned” and smoked for softness, and colored with dyes from plants and animals by members of the Lakota women’s societies. Over 200 sections of hair were donated by Lakota tribal members of Pine Ridge – each bound with a porcupine quill, wrapped in leather originally intended as “warrior spirits” to protect Red Cloud on his journey.

In total, the production of each replica required a team of Native Americans – each with different specialties – who ultimately contributed more than 1,000 hours to the effort.

The making of each replica was overseen by Larry Belitz, one of the world’s leading historians on Native American handicrafts. He has served museums in understanding Lakota spirituality, and he provided historic items for numerous documentaries. He also served as Technical and Historical Adviser on ten major motion pictures involving Native American culture.

In preparation for the creation of the replicas, he was given exclusive access to the real shirt in the Cody museum. He was allowed to photograph and study every detail – something never been allowed before or since.

Only six replicas of the shirt exist in the world, and because of the complexity involved, there will be no more.

A Black Hills Landmark Reincarnated.

One of the very best restaurants in all of the Black Hills is affiliated with the historic Black Forest Inn near Pactola Lake off highway 385 between highway 44 and the Three Forks intersection. Named Musekamp’s Grill & Pub to honor its original founder, it offers a simple but delicious menu. Indeed, there are just six main plates, including a cheeseburger, fish tacos, chicken & waffles, trout, cajun pork chop and hand-carved NY steak. But each is uniquely prepared and cooked to perfection.

Like the menu, the restaurant itself is simple but nicely designed.

Though the restaurant is relatively new it was reincarnated from one that began in 1914 as part of Moose Camp Park by one of the Hills’ most colorful characters – Bernice Musekamp. Having never cooked before, Bernice cooked 24 hours in advance to give her enough time to throw her mistakes to the chickens. Eventually, she earned a reputation for good, home-cooked food. The latest version of the restaurant has improved on what Bernice started to a degree she could never have imagined. So, too, has the inn, which originally opened in 1953. It’s now a B&B with seven beautifully-appointed cabins. All of the cabins are furnished with lovely antiques…even handmade quilts.

Concerts In The Wild.

For example, this summer Red Canyon Company will be offering free Concerts in the Wild featuring Hank Harris who gained national fame as part of the popular Red Willow Band. He’ll be performing the Deadwood Songbook, a project of the Deadwood Adams Museum, featuring music that was popular in Deadwood circa 1876 to 1910 during the height of the Black Hills Gold Rush.
